More about me
Where have I been?
Originally from South Korea, I grew up in the Canary Islands and Madrid for 17 years before I moved to New York to study fashion design at Parsons School of Design.
After graduating in 2004, I was introduced to the corporate fashion industry designing for Tommy Hilfiger for over two years. Then I designed for a contemporary women’s wear brand owned by Jennifer Lopez called Sweetface for another two years.
Having lived in New York for ten years, I decided to move back to Spain to design for ZARA in La Coruña, Spain. I was uninspired living in a small town and completely turned off by fast fashion, therefore I fled to Barcelona where I designed for the bridal company Pronovias for one year. Eventually I came to the conclusion that I was not happy with my career path, which led me to applying for the MA Innovation Management course at CSM.
Why MA Innovation Management?
For years my focus has been on the creative side of fashion design, one of my dreams being to attend the Master’s program for Fashion Design at CSM. Recently though, I have realized that I have been neglecting a very important aspect of the fashion industry: creative thinking within the business model of profitable companies. I have survived in this industry because I do have the artistic talent and training, and a ‘basic’ business mindset.
After graduating from Parsons School of Design with a BFA in Fashion Design and working as a designer for over five years, I have come to the conclusion that I will remain just a designer and never a leader in the industry if my evolution as a designer does not reflect this combination of creativity in design and creativity in business. I need to be able to speak the business language and have the appropriate tools to become a leader. I am conscious that fashion design is not a medium that can radically change this world but utilizing a different approach and attitude in this field can make small changes to achieve a better balance for this world.
Where am I going?
MA Innovation and Management at CSM would give me the tools and the confidence that would allow me to pursue my ambition to improve and advance the fashion industry in a more humane manner. I have stopped dreaming in a narcissistic way, floating through my surrealist fantasy mentality. I have started to dream of a better world while simultaneously making it more meaningful for myself. In the near future I would like to manage a competitive, strong and creative team of designers willing to shift the mentality of the fashion industry.
My industry experiences have exposed me to the current eco-conscious trend, even this being a ‘superficial’ corporate strategy to maximize profits. My objective is to influence this movement by finding innovative ways to work with the industry, finding solutions to combine the naturalistic approach while preserving the glamour that fashion represents. I believe that CSM will offer the opportunity to evolve my creativity by acquiring a business mentality, which combined with the right attitude and intentions could lead to my being able to have a meaningful impact on the fashion industry.
