Where have I been?

I specialise in helping individuals and teams to grow and become economically viable by doing what they are good at, like to do, and care the most about. I’ve spent my whole career either leading the design and implementation of entrepreneurial strategy, or developing the capability of others to do so.

I grew up in Chile, the US, Scotland and Brazil, got a BA in Literature from Reed College and an MBA from the University of Washington.

I started my career in Silicon Valley with ACS, a startup that pioneered angioplasty, was acquired by Eli Lilly and was later spun off as Guidant, a Fortune 500 company. I was promoted to a series of senior posts, including founding CFO for a spin-off and Managing Director in Germany and Spain. I then left to build the European operations for Gynecare, a startup acquired by Johnson & Johnson. I subsequently joined Gorilla Park, a pan-European technology incubator and launched their operations in Sweden as Managing Director.

I founded Slingshot Venture Development in 2001. My clients have included tech companies, university incubators, tech transfer programmes, and early stage investors–including supporting portfolio companies at NESTA Investments as Executive-in-Residence.

In 2010 I decided it was time to ‘go back to school’ and integrate what I had learned in practice with more deliberate thinking. I took a part-time sabbatical, and enrolled in the MA Innovation course to research ways we can create new ‘adhoc, porous organisational models’ and new tools to help everyone–not just self styled entrepreneurs–cultivate their ability to ‘design our worlds in a variety of levels and arenas’ under conditions of significant uncertainty.

I received a Distinction for my dissertation which became the foundation for Simple Venture Design, an integrative approach which combines creative ’emergent thinking’ tools such as lean startup, design thinking and effectual entrepreneurship with more traditional analytic tools, thus enabling entrepreneurs to manage uncertainty by balancing creativity and analytic rigour.

I’ve designed and delivered bootcamps and entrepreneurship courses at City University, Hong Kong University and in Nigeria. My current projects include the design and launch of an EdTech Accelerator programme for entrepreneurial teachers.

I’m fluent in five languages and can fake Italian.
