Where have I been?
The past decade I’ve been doing research in the intersection of branding and product design, which led to the book Branding and Product Design: An integrated Perspective being published by Gower Applied Business Research in 2013. I started my venture into design with a five-year MA in industrial design from the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, and also spent time as an Erasmus scholar at the École nationale supérieure de création industrielle in Paris. Not completely satisfied with the theoretical basis of commerce in industrial design, I continued with a PhD (also in Oslo) that investigated the product designers’ role in brand building.
Before embarking on research, I started my design career as an interaction designer in a Linux software firm during the heady days of the dot.com-bubble, and then set up my first consultancy in 2003. I have since then conducted branding and design work in high-tech and FMCG sectors as well as for service focused companies. One of my most challenging assignments, which also provided national policy development experience, was as a member of the Government commission that drafted the Norwegian Higher Education Act 2005.
After relocating to the UK in 2009 I joined Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design (CSM) as an associate lecturer. In 2012 I set up Brand Valley Design Ltd, which is a creative management consultancy determined to provide cutting edge knowledge about branding, design and innovation. My management teaching projects have in the past three years involved giving courses in the UK, China, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and South Korea.
What I’m talking about:
